Coastal Brown Bears Of Southeast Alaska

Brown Bears are the only type of bear that lives in Sitka, Alaska. In fact they are the only bears that live on Baranof Island.

Brown bears can weigh over 1,000 pounds and stand over 10 feet tall and run up to 40 mph! Making them top of the food chain when it comes to land mammals around the Sitka area.

The best time to Photograph and view Brown bears, begins in late August through October . When the salmon return to spawning grounds in the many rivers around Sitka. Brown bears are drawn out of the woods and down to the beaches where they can find all the food a bear could ask for - Salmon! At this time they are trying to put on as much fat reserves for the winter hibernation.
