Capture Alaska’s Wildlife

Highlight months.

March - April Spring time in Sitka marks the beginning of the Humpback whale season. During these months Humpbacks can be observed “bubble net feeding” something that needs to be seen in person to truly enjoy! It also brings other animals in great numbers such as: Stellar sea lions and Bald eagles.

May-July In May, Brown bears can sometimes be seen along the coastlines, as they search for fresh food after winter months. June and July are great “all around” Months to visit and photograph wildlife and landscapes. You can expect to see many types of wildlife such as Puffins, Whales, Sea otters, Sitka Black Tailed Deer, Brown bear.. to name a few. While these months are good for viewing a variety of animals. We strongly suggest looking at coming in the spring months for whales or late summer / fall for brown bears. Your chances of seeing both are greatly increased during those blocks of time.

August-October As summer winds down the salmon enter the many rivers and streams around the Sitka area to spawn. While on its own it’s quite the spectacle to watch, the main attraction is the Brown bear viewing opportunities. With the abundance of salmon in the river, it brings many brown bears out of the woods and down into the river where they can be viewed and photographed. This is also a excellent time to photograph many types of birds such as Bald eagles.
